The Chair of Geopedology and Landscape Development investigates climate-driven and human-influenced developments in natural and cultural landscapes, based on geological, geomorphological and pedological principles.
As part of a three-year German-Polish collaborative project funded by the DFG and the NCN, we are using a multi-methodological approach to study the structures and characteristics of the historic mining landscape of Tarnowskie Góry in Upper Silesia, Poland.
The aim of the project is to uncover the complex architecture of this outstanding landscape as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and to reconstruct the key phases of its formation.

In the Chair of Geopedology and Landscape Development at the Faculty of Environment and Natural Sciences the following position - as part of a third-party-funded project - is to be filled:

Your area of responsibility includes in
particular:
Research activities:
- Academic work within the framework of the chair’s key research areas,
- Collaboration in the preparation and implementation of externally funded projects, in this case the DFG project: “The UNESCO site of Tarnowskie Góry: Investigating a complex mining landscape and its development using geoarchaeological methods”
- Assistance with the preparation of publications, including in international peer-reviewed journals
- Active participation in national and international conferences
- Other research-related administrative tasks.
The research topic is ideally suited to leading to a PhD
Your requirements profile:
- A completed academic degree (Master’s/university diploma/equivalent) in a subject relevant to the role (environmental sciences, soil science, geology, geography, geoecology, geoarchaeology or comparable)
You should possess the following knowledge and/or experience:
- Experience in at least one of the following areas of responsibility:
- GIS and analysis of digital terrain models,
- Geophysical prospection (ERT, GPR, magnetic surveys),
- Pedological or sedimentological analyses
- Willingness to familiarise yourself with or deepen your knowledge of all areas of responsibility
- Basic knowledge of Quaternary landscape development in Central Europe
- Good command of spoken and written German and English
- Category B driving licence
You possess the following personal skills:
- Ability to carry out scientific work, independence, flexibility, communication skills
- Willingness to undertake business trips lasting several weeks for fieldwork in Poland
